How to Decorate a Small Sunporch on a Budget

Sunporches create the perfect outdoor space during the spring and summer months. You can entertain guests on your porch, enjoy a cool drink or relax with a good book. But if your sunporch lacks style and charm, you might avoid this area of your house. Rather than cast off your sunporch, transform this space into an inviting oasis. Decorating can often be costly, but a few cost-effective methods can help you add style to your porch.
  1. Determining Your Budget

    • Decide how much you're able to spend decorating your sunporch. Your budget is the foundation for the project, and it determines what you can include in your new space. Review your personal finances to assess your disposable income. You don't need a huge budget to decorate a small sunporch. In fact, it is possible to add a touch of style and decor for under $100.

    Painting Your Sunporch

    • Enclosed sunporches offer privacy and the opportunity to enjoy the space throughout the year. If you're decorating an enclosed sunporch, paint the walls a lively, vibrant color to spruce up the space. Ideas include a bright pink, blue or yellow. If you prefer a cozy, relaxing sunporch, select a warmer color, such as taupe or maroon. Painting is an inexpensive way to give a room style and personality, and you can purchase a gallon of paint for under $30 at the time of publication. In addition, you can hang inexpensive drapes or shades on windows to control the amount of light that enters the room.

    Patio Furniture

    • Visit flea markets, yard sales or check the classified ads in your newspaper for inexpensive patio furniture for your sunporch. Furniture might include a wicker set, outdoor patio/lawn chairs or perhaps a futon. You can buy used furniture cheaply and then spray-paint it to freshen or brighten the color. If you prefer new furniture, pay attention to local sales by reading advertisements and circulars. Home decor retailers often have patio furniture on sale or clearance after the summer season. Just make sure to measure your space and measure the furniture you plan to buy before bringing it home.

    Home Accents

    • Pictures, plants, pillows and rugs can give your sunporch an immediate transformation. Wall art is ideal if you've enclosed the sunporch, and you can find cheap prints at flea markets or closeout stores. Purchase an outdoor rug for the center of your sunporch, and position outdoor pillows and cushions on chairs to create comfortable seating. Place flowers and plants around the perimeter of your sunporch to give the space a pop of color, and bring in addition outdoor accents, such as a bird feeder and a small outdoor table. For covered or enclosed sunporches, keep a storage ottoman in this area to stash frequently used items, such as games, blankets and books.
