How to Make Decorations for a Fish/Beach Bathroom

Bathrooms need not be simply utilitarian spaces devoid of style and design. Implement elements of coastal style for your bathroom -- objects that look like they washed up the beach alongside items commonly used when fishing. While coastal style is relaxed and understated, use restraint when decorating a bathroom or any other space. Edit while decorating to avoid the bathroom looking planned and not relaxed.
  1. Seashells

    • Seashells, either found by the shore or in a craft store, lend a beach-inspired feel to any bathroom. Glue small shells around an otherwise bare mirror or picture frame for a retro-inspired coastal feel. Should you have spare space, either in open shelving or windowsills, and a fear of glue gun disasters, decorate the spaces with shells. Line the shelves or sills with vintage ceramic bowls and glass hurricane lamps filled with votive candles and shells ranging from small to medium. Save the larger shells, like the conch, as decorative objects on top of towels in open shelving or on a wide sink basin alongside several starfish in various sizes.

    Paint

    • Use paint to further elaborate upon your beach and fish decorative style. There's a reason beach-inspired bathrooms tend to reference the same palette of neutrals, such as creamy whites, sandy tans, and light blues. These are the colors you are most likely to find at the beach. Bright colors, such as teal blue or coral pink, should be using sparingly and only for visual interest.
Paint wood pictures in neutral shades of milk paint for a vintage feel or distress a substantial piece of furniture. Seek out a piece of wood furniture that not only fits the space and provides storage, but can be used to further the coastal theme. Paint one coat of a darker shade, let dry, and then coat with a complementary lighter shade. Sand the edges for a distressed, weathered look. If furniture is not an option, create a wall border of stenciled fish shapes in pale tones that seem to seep within the wall's current paint color.

    Muslin and Linen

    • Decorate your bathroom's windows with handmade linen or muslin curtains. Purchase pieces of light tan or white linen or muslin that have been cut to size by your local fabric or craft store. Clip curtain rings to the top of the fabric and hang from a simple curtain rod. Leave the fabric bare, or decorate it with either hand painted fish or stenciled fish. A vintage or vintage-style wooden oar would also work as a curtain rod. Further the beach and fish theme with fish-shaped tiebacks to hold back the curtains, or make your tieback with thick pieces of nautical rope.

    Found Items

    • Adorn your bathroom with items that look like they have washed up on shore. Smooth pebbles rendered shades of gray and white after being tossed in the surf add subtle charm when paired with pieces of driftwood and dried starfish. A clean wicker fishing basket can be a decorative wall hanging or be used to hold extra beauty items. Other beach-inspired accessories can include carefully arranged old glass bottles, with or without messages, and fishing nets.
