Upholster Help & Tips

Padding and covering furniture is a trade known as upholstery, usually done by a professional upholsterer. Some simple furniture pieces, such as dining chairs or upholstered headboards, make excellent beginner projects for learning upholstery.
  1. Tools

    • Upholstery success depends upon having adequate tools to do the job. Some of the tools you need to have on hand are basic tools, such as a measuring tape, pliers, hammer, wood glue and box cutter. You also need a seam ripper, lining, upholstery tacks, upholstery-weight thread and fabric, a staple gun with staples and chalk or a fabric pen.

    Fabric Choice

    • Beginners at upholstery should choose their fabrics carefully. If it is a practical option, consider choosing a heavyweight fabric made of natural fibers, such as a cotton or cotton blend. These are less expensive options and are most easy to work with. Try to avoid large, repeating patterns, which require the upholsterer to match the patterns. This will add a level of difficulty.

    Cutting Foam

    • The thickness of foam determines the amount of cushion in the furniture. Fortunately, since it is covered by the fabric, it is very forgiving. Cut the foam, using a razor blade, into small slices. You can cut several pieces of foam and butt them up to each other to make a longer piece. Likewise, they can be layered to create a thicker padding.

    Creating a Pattern

    • Take the original fabric off of the piece carefully so that you can use it to create a pattern for your new fabric. Consider adding a trim, cording or grommets along the edges to give the piece a new feel and add a new element that will make it look ultra-polished.
