Gossamer Ideas

Sheer gossamer material creates dramatic decorating effects and is available in either plain, single color versions or with patterned or metallic accents. Use it indoors or outdoors to decorate for both adults and children's parties, or use it to make fairy wings for fancy dress parties or dress-up games.
  1. Windows

    • Dress up windows with gossamer to create a filmy, romantic look in bedrooms, or to add to a princess theme in a little girl's bedroom. You'll need gossamer that's at least twice the width of your window, and a curtain rod, which you can buy from a home-improvement store. Either create drapes with the gossamer by hanging lengths over the curtain rod, or loosely braid three lengths of gossamer to wrap around the rod as a decorative window treatment.

    Tables

    • Create holiday or seasonal, layered tablecloths using gossamer. Cut two lengths of gossamer to the size you need to cover your table. Choose accents to lay between the gossamer layers, such as confetti, flower petals or leaves, cut-out shapes of bats or pumpkins for Halloween or love-hearts for a valentine dinner table. Lay one sheet of gossamer on the table, spread your accents out in any way you prefer, then lay the other gossamer sheet on top.

    Walls

    • Because gossamer is available in so many colors, it's possible to dress up party rooms in colors to suit the theme of the party. To decorate walls with gossamer, you'll need to measure the length of the walls and buy strips that equal twice that length. Run wires along the top and bottom of the walls, fixing them at each end with eye screws. Pleat or fold each gossamer strip to half its original width, then loop it over the top of the wire and secure with pins or by sewing. Stretch the strip down to the bottom wire and secure it in the same way, arranging the folds and pleats down the length of the gossamer strip.

    Ropes

    • Braid together two or three colors of gossamer to create ropes for swags along the tops of walls or windows, or as streamers draped from a central point in the ceiling to the opposite walls. Add clear twinkling lights in a braid to give a festive effect for Christmas time, or on any occasion you want a little extra sparkle.
