Teen Room Makeover Ideas

Teen room bedroom makeovers can be challenging. The teen wants a certain look or paint colors, while parents can want something that ties in more closely to the overall look and decor of the home in general. Finding ways to compromise on styles, techniques and furnishings is key to making the makeover successful -- for teens and for parents. Focus first on a key makeover need, such as a change in wall paint or creating a study space that is as efficient in structure as it is cool in design and character. Teens and parents both must be willing to make compromises. Parents can always exercise their right to shut the door and keep the teen's decor decisions behind closed doors.
  1. Wall Paint Colors

    • Be willing to compromise on color choices and style.

Turn a teen's bedroom walls from drab to fab. Paint plain white walls with the teen's favorite colors. Paint walls in a teen girl's room in "diva-licious" pink or lipstick red color to embrace her love for beauty and fashion. In a boy's room, alternate the wall paint colors of his favorite sports team, such as gold and hunter green for a boy who loves the Green Bay Packers, or purple and gold to celebrate his love for the Los Angeles Lakers.

    Ceiling

    • Instead of simply keeping a ceiling plain with a white paint, turn the ceiling into a bedroom "space" for inspiration. Use wallpaper borders to give the ceiling an artistic flair with flowers or contemporary graphics that connect with things the teen loves. For example, look for wallpaper borders that include graphics of musical notes or photographic murals to connect with a teen's love for music and nature. Paint the entire ceiling with a color -- versus simply sticking to white. Consider using wallpaper with a mural design that mimics a tropical rain forest or even the solar system so your teen can look up and dream on with visuals that embody her interests and passions.

    "Techno" Study Wall

    • Encouraging good study habits can be incorporated into the overall design plan for a makeover of a teen's room. Dedicate one wall to do so. Consider using blackboard paint to create a "techno wall" for one room in the teen's bedroom. Use it to create a cool and hip backdrop for the teen's study desk, computer and electronic equipment. Get high-tech looking furniture with chrome embellishments to heighten the modern techy look. Install shelves made of glass so that books, CDs and DVDs appear to "float." Get washable neon chalks for the teen to keep track of homework assignments on his chalkboard wall. Parents can benefit and use the chalkboard wall as a messaging tool. They can use the wall and bright-colored, hard-to-miss neon chalk to remind the teen about additional "homework" assignments, such as remembering to take out the trash or babysitting siblings.

    Closet

    • The teen years are the "it" years when it comes to concerns about style and fashion. Focusing on the closet alone can be an entire makeover project -- especially if the teen loves clothes and fashion. Carpet the closet in red to give a teen girl interested in fashion a "red carpet" treatment. Carpet the floor in black and white checkerboard vinyl tiles for a teen boy who is interested in fast cars and Nascar.
