French Countryside

• Drawing inspiration from cottages in rural France, French countryside decor has an elegant feel that is complemented by rustic, natural elements. The color palette typically consists of deep, rich shades, including blue, red, green and yellow. Red and yellow is a common combination, as is blue and yellow. However, whatever colors you choose, black is usually used as an accent shade in French countryside decor. Walls are often done in a stucco-like finish, though toile-patterned wallpaper adds an authentic touch as well. In fact, toile patterns and fabrics are usually a key feature in French countryside decor. Other fabrics that are often used include calico and chintz, which give the room a classic, old-fashioned feel. To bring in the natural element, stone or wood are often used for flooring, while dark stains or faux finishes are common on wood furniture.

English Countryside

• English countryside decor is reminiscent of the style that might be found in pastoral English cottages. Like French countryside design, it also makes use of natural elements, and flooring options typically include stone, wood or natural fiber rugs such as grass matting. Blue and white are a common color combination, and wooden items often have a decorative finish such as whitewashing. Red and green may be used as accent shades in the room as well. Furniture is usually upholstered or slip covered, and floral patterns are a key element in English countryside decor. Natural fabrics such as silk, burlap and linen can add attractive texture to the space as well. Paintings of English gardens or cottages are an ideal wall hanging.

Italian Countryside

• Italian countryside decoration is based on the Tuscan region, where the central themes are typically wine and food. As a result, it is an ideal decorating style for a kitchen. The color palette usually includes warm earth tones such as brown and terracotta, and includes pops of bright colors like orange, red, yellow and green. Blue is often used as an accent color as well. As with the other countryside decorating styles, natural elements are key, so stone, tile or wood floors are the best options. Exposed wood beams in the ceiling or copper and iron accent pieces also work well. Texture is also an important part of the decor, so walls may be treated with a Venetian plaster finish. Furniture should be large and heavy, and is typically made of dark stained wood. For accessories, food items, such as baskets of seasonal vegetables; decorative bottles of olive oil and vinegar; and glass jars filled with garlic cloves or dried pasta are ideal.

American Country

• American country decor celebrates classic Americana, so it has a traditional, old-fashioned look. As a result, the color palette usually makes use of red, white and blue. Neutral tones such as tan, beige and brown are incorporated as well, and yellow may be introduced for a pop of color. Patterns can play an important part as well, including plaid, gingham and stripes. Look for natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and wool, though chintz may also be used. Furniture is usually upholstered, though you may opt for wicker or caned items as well. Wooden furniture often has a distressed finish or stenciled designs for a decorative look.
