How to Decorate a Chimney

A home chimney is a valuable feature. Aside from the heating benefits and cozy ambiance, the mantel provides extra space for decor to create a focal point in the room. Decorating the fireplace enhances the room's look and transforms the style of the fireplace itself. Prevent a cluttered appearance on the fireplace by choosing a theme or decor style that complements the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Select items to place on the mantel. They can be of the same color palette or theme, and should complement the rest of the room's decor. Keep the decor interesting by using slightly different heights, but avoid items that vary too greatly. Mix styles to create contrast in the room, especially if you have eclectic taste. For example, choose a modern glass vase with fresh flowers to place on one end, followed by a collection of antique jars on the opposite end.

    • 2

Limit clutter by only using four pieces of decor--three on one side of the mantel, and one on the opposite end. The three items should belong to a set or relate to one another, to keep the mantel style cohesive. For example, place a set of three varying-height candlesticks and candles on one side of the mantel, followed by a vase of fresh flowers on the opposite end.

    • 3

Layer the objects on the fireplace mantel to create a sense of depth. On the side with three items, bring one item to the front and leave the other two in the back to create a triangle shape.

    • 4

Decorate the fireplace seasonally by placing flowers on the mantel during warmer months, when the fireplace is not in use. During the holidays, garland and pine cones can adorn the mantel.

    • 5

Choose decor that fits proportionally with the fireplace. With a large mantel, choose larger pieces of decor, and vice versa.
