How to Decorate With Country Barn Stars

A country-style home would not be complete without a barn star. These metal stars were created in the German farming community as far back as the 1700s. Farmers would affix the stars to the outside of the barn. The stars were thought of as good luck but many represented the trademark of the barn builder. Builders had their own style of star to identify their work. Today, many people use barn stars in or on their home to express their style or to bring good luck.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an unfinished barn star for the exterior of your home. The weather will rust and patina the finish. Hang the star on the front porch or center it over the garage door.

    • 2

Use a large star instead of a painting to decorate the space over the fireplace mantel. Paint the star to match your decor. Hang a collection of stars in varying sizes above the fireplace.

    • 3

Hang a jumbo-sized star in place of a twin-sized headboard for a cowboy themed bedroom. Accent the windows with small barn stars as curtain hold-backs. Make a table out of old barn wood and inlay a barn star. Place a piece of glass over the top of the table.

String small barn stars on ribbons and hang from a Shaker peg shelf. Paint decorative motifs such as flowers or polka dots on each star. Hang the Shaker peg shelf in the entryway of your home. Paint your family initials on barn stars and hang on the pegs.
