Floor Theme Ideas

Whether you're in an office building full of cubicles or a residential structure where several families share a common hall, floor themes--schemes for the decoration of a hallway or common area on a single floor of a building--provide a creative and exciting way to spice up your daily life. Floor themes can range from the easy to recognize to the subtle and hip, or from temporary décor to full and permanent makeovers.
  1. Organic

    • Plants, clay pots and tiles, and visuals of natural beauty can all contribute to an organic theme. Alternatively, incorporate ivy, potted plants and wicker. The building's interior should complement this floor theme, especially if the floor is made from natural tile or wood. Live plants require both care and sunlight, so this floor theme must remain well-tended with lots of natural light.

    Hollywood

    • Give the floor a Hollywood theme with pictures of movie stars and movie posters. Focus on the work of a single filmmaker or film franchise, or take a broader approach and exhibit a variety of movies, filmmakers and stars. One interesting variation on the Hollywood floor theme is to re-create the visual style of a particular film or director. Characteristic additions such as the red velvet curtain from Twin Peaks or the heraldic emblems from Harry Potter allow the resident to experience the feeling of walking through the film.

    Traditional

    • As buildings become more and more pre-fabricated, the character of the traditional home fades. Bring it back with a traditional floor theme. Include antique-look accent tables, traditional paintings and lace curtained windows, along with wainscoting and wallpaper, plus wood floors instead of carpet.

    Sports

    • Honoring the local team, the entire sport or the concept of sports in general, the sports floor theme features pictures, pennants, helmets and decals. The sports theme works well in both offices and residential units as a short term set-up, with the option for resident or employee participation.

    Music

    • Like sports, music floor themes allow each resident to express his individuality by decorating his door or an adjacent wall with images of a favorite band, artist or album. Because some music visuals are explicit, this theme may require monitoring from the supervisor or superintendent.
