Inexpensive Ways to Change Countertops

A countertop sets the tone for your kitchen and cupboard area in many ways. It also has to fulfill other purposes: It has to be durable and it has to work with the overall style of your home and of course, your kitchen. Keep the countertop makeover inexpensive by looking for higher-end materials at local vintage, second-hand and surplus stores. Look for sell-offs at building supply stores, and scour your local paper.
  1. Fresh Coat of Paint

    • Give your counter a fresh coat of paint -- one way to a bold new look. Create a truly unique look with a bold pop of blue, red or gold. Keep a darker color if you're avoiding stains. White always looks fresh and clean and is especially useful in modern kitchens where stainless steel appliances abound.

    Stainless Steel

    • Source a piece of stainless steel and create a high-end countertop at a lower cost if you find the stainless steel at a discount warehouse or other store. Stainless steel wears and washes well; you can also use the steel as a cutting board.

    Tile

    • Add ceramic, marble, hard plastic or other tiles, such as those often seen in a backsplash behind a stove, to your kitchen counter. Tiles are a lower-cost home investment, but they can instantly clean up your counter area and give a renovated feel to your kitchen. There are also plenty of options in terms of color and how you pattern the tiles for your own mosaic style.

    Wood

    • Add a piece of wood to your counter. Search for unique but inexpensive wood at yard and vintage sales, antique shows, or even source wood from an existing item in your home. Buff and finish the wood so it is polished for a professional look. This approach works well in kitchens with a rugged appeal and bodes particularly well for a cabin.
