How to Decorate the Interiors of Church Rooms

Decorating the interior of church rooms is a little different than decorating the rooms of your home. Rather than expressing your personality, you have to tap into the personality of the church itself to determine not only the proper colors, but also the right decorations. Depending on the congregation, certain decorations or colors may be inappropriate or unappreciated. Once you've figured out the mood of the parishioners, however, the rest of the decorating will fall right into place.

Instructions

Ask what rooms will be used for what purposes. For instance, most churches have specific rooms set aside for nurseries, teen activity rooms, Bible study and church council meetings. Each of these rooms has to be decorated differently. While doing this, gauge how traditional the congregation of the church is to determine what decorations are appropriate for each room.

    • 2

Paint common rooms and hallways in light, neutral colors. Neutral colors are appropriate for rooms used primarily by adults, but you may want to infuse color into rooms that are used predominantly by children.

    • 3

Paint children's rooms such as nurseries, preschool rooms and teen rooms in gender-neutral colors like green and yellow. Avoid using blue or pink due to their gender connotations.

    • 4

Decorate the rooms with paintings or posters appropriate to the congregation of the church. For instance, some churches might want graphic depictions of the stations of the cross displayed prominently, while other churches might opt for a more family-friendly atmosphere. Adult-use rooms might benefit from reproductions of famous religious masterpieces from the renaissance, while children's-use rooms will be more inviting if you use cartoon-style images for decoration.
