How to Have International Design in a Room

International design covers a broad range of decor styles. Whether you choose Japanese modern, Indian motifs or Old World elegance, you will have thousands of options to incorporate international design into a room. Before you begin, select a style. Having too many different design themes in one room can create a feeling of disunity, and the room may not look polished.

Instructions

Choose a color scheme for the room that reflects the international motif you have chosen. For example, if you have chosen an Indian motif, choose paint colors that are warm, such as a cinnamon, yellow ochre or purple. For a Japanese theme, stark white and black with touches of red works well. Read about the culture for the international design you have chosen and let this be a guide for color choices.

Hang window treatments for your international design theme. Once again, the fabrics and colors used should reflect your theme. For a Japanese theme, choose rice paper shades or tatami woven shades. For an Indian theme, hang authentic saris over the windows.

Hang artwork around the room. These paintings should be bold and represent either graphics and colors representative of the international design you have chosen or landscapes from the relevant area. This gives the room an authentic look and feel.

    • 4

Upgrade the furniture in the room. If you have a Shaker style couch, it will appear out of place with an Indian design. Make sure the furniture pieces are in harmony with the international design. Japanese design is typically modern, and modern furniture pieces that sit low to the ground are appropriate. For an Indian design, use either modern pieces or British Colonial furniture.

Accessorize the room. Use small decor objects such as figurines or vases in strategic points around the room. A collection of figurines can be displayed on an end table or a coffee table. Less is more when it comes to accessories, so do not overdo it. A few key pieces make a stronger design statement than a room full of clutter.
