How to Make Your Own Gothic Deco

Make over existing furniture pieces by painting the surfaces with black paint. Change the entire look of a coffee table, for example, by painting the legs with black enamel paint and covering the surface with concrete. The Gothic decor style calls for large pieces of furniture made of solid wood with metal hinges and trim, so you can create a Goth look just by adding some iron trim. Stencil a fleur-de-lis pattern on current furniture pieces. Add wrought iron pieces to the room.

Paint your walls with colors such as "Kingsrobe" purple or "Victorian garnet." Black walls may look too dark; however, you could have one black accent wall in a room. Try wallpaper that has a dark background with a simple pattern or use a stencil to decorate a plain wall with Gothic calligraphic flourish symbols.

Hang dramatic window treatments such as burgundy or dark purple velvet or velveteen drapes. Purchase the material and make them yourself. Alternatively, use black lace to cover windows. Small tables or even a dining room table can be covered with a black lace tablecloth. You could purchase a round, black tablecloth and glue or sew white or gray ribbon on it to look like a large spider web.

Install new flooring to match your Goth theme with stick-on tiles you can apply yourself. Measure the room to determine how many tiles you need to cover the floor --most stick-on tiles measure one square foot. Floor tiles come in varying colors and patterns and can range from less than a dollar a square foot and up. Choose a pattern such as black marble for the best effect.

Accessorize any room in your home with items such as candles and candle holders. Choose wall art with metal or wrought iron frames or metal sculptures. Think metal candlesticks or candelabras, a Gothic-style oil burner or arrange a vase of black roses. Medieval pieces may work as well; consider armor pieces, coat of arms, Gothic cathedral mirrors, wall tapestries and metal wall sconces.
