How to Decorate an English Equestrian Den

Decorating with an English equestrian style is useful for making your den appear aged, refined and sophisticated yet comforting. To express your love for an equestrian style, display horse enthusiast items from paintings and photographs to actual riding tack and equipment paired with thoughtful furnishings and colors. Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls of the room using gold, gray or light shades of red, green or blue to keep the room feeling open, yet cozy. Add wood-toned wainscoting to the lower half of the walls, if possible.

    • 2

Place couches and chairs in the den made from dark colors of leather, but not black. Choose oak or mahogany wood furniture for bookshelves, end tables or coffee tables.

    • 3

Use lamps, bookends or metal vases made from brass or pewter to add more depth to the room. Where possible, choose items with a horse displayed on them. Avoid cowboy, Arabian or Native American styled items to keep the theme English.

    • 4

Add fabric items to the room, such as pillows, curtains, valances or throw blankets, which feature brick reds, hunter greens or browns to reflect the colors of a foxhunt. Use dark blue if necessary, as well as plaid prints that mainly show reds or browns.

    • 5

Hang large equestrian paintings, prints or photos along the walls in wooden or gold decorative frames. Include small paintings on short walls or near doorways. Suitable items include images of foxhunts, women in dresses riding sidesaddle, portraits of horses, views of old English barns or shots of foxes or coon hounds.

Add in equestrian equipment as decorative items in the den such as hanging a bridle on the wall, setting horseshoes over the doorways, placing riding boots next to a fireplace or keeping old riding manuals on the coffee table.
