Design for a Hello Kitty Kid's Room

The Japanese company Sanrio developed Hello Kitty in the 1970s. Today this Japanese export is still a favorite with kids, and you can find her on items as diverse as backpacks and bedspreads. Because of this, Hello Kitty home decorating items are plentiful, giving you much to work with when designing your child's Hello Kitty room.
  1. Hello Kitty World

    • Kitty White lives in London with her family. Although a cat herself, the kitty character has other animal friends, such as the bunny Kathy and Timmy and Tammy monkey. If you can find decorative items with these characters on them as well, it will give your Hello Kitty room a more interesting look but still support the overall decorative theme. Introduce these items in the form of decorative knickknacks, wall stickers or bedding.

    Colors

    • When decorating with a Hello Kitty motif in your child's room, lay the foundation of the decorating scheme with your color choices. Pink is the color most associated with Hello Kitty. Apply a coat of hot pink paint to one wall to create a focal wall on which you'll hang Hello Kitty posters or decorative accessories. Add a coat of the same pink paint to the inside of the shelves of the bookcase, which makes a theme-specific space in which you can display a Hello Kitty collection. Buy pink throw pillows to accent the bed. Lay down pink carpeting on the floor. Pink supports the decorative theme without requiring you to have items that have Hello Kitty printed on them, bringing visual balance to your child's room.

    Accessories

    • Hello Kitty decorative accessories abound on the market. You can find them both online and in retail stores. By looking around, you'll find items such as bedspreads, clocks, rugs, wall accessories, collectible items, curtains and others. Lay the bedspread on the bed, and stuff fluffy pillows into the Hello Kitty pillow shams. Place a Hello Kitty clock by the bed or on the focal wall above the bed. Hang a Hello Kitty wallpaper border on the walls.

    Decoupage

    • If you have trouble finding furniture pieces stamped with the Hello Kitty motif, decorate some pieces of your choosing with this theme. The craft technique of decoupage allows you to do this. Decoupage is a craft in which you glue illustrations or pictures onto an item and then add a protective layer of glue on top of the finished product. Hello Kitty stationary products provide you with a good starting point for this task. Cut out the Hello Kitty designs from the stationary. Ensure you have enough to cover the item you're decoupaging. Glue them onto the furniture or accessory piece with craft glue that you mix with water. Allow it to dry, and then use the same glue and water mixture to add a varnish-like layer on top. If you paint the piece pink before you decoupage it, it will doubly reinforce the Hello Kitty design.
