How to Decorate a Row Home From the Late 1800s

Unlike the houses of today, homes in many cities in the late 1800s were built in a conjoined fashion known as row homes or row houses. These typically urban dwellings share a wall with a neighbor on each side, except for the end units, but have no neighbors above or below the dwelling. When you want to decorate your row home, choose a classic style that reflects the style of the late 1800s.

Preserve or restore the original floors. Row homes typically had beautiful hardwood floors. Sand and stain the original wood floors in your home, or replace those that are damaged beyond repair. Use throw rugs and hallway runners to add a cozy touch that keeps with the period of your home.

Choose quality wooden furniture when and wherever possible. An oak dining table with matching chairs, a complementary wooden hutch and an old-fashioned roll-top desk will fit in perfectly with your decor. Skip the pressed-board furniture and black lacquer. Neither were a staple during this time period.

Opt for an Arts and Crafts style decor. Decorate with handmade quilts, stained glass lamps and original or reproductions of artwork from this period. Paint your walls with natural colors in muted shades like mossy green, burnt sienna and dove gray.

Hang black and white photographs throughout your home. Take photos of the neighborhood in black and white or sepia for an aged look, and showcase the beauty of the other, adjoining row houses in your area. Capture some of the natural flora and fauna that lurk outside your door on film and use those photos as well.
