Casual Mediterranean Decor

Mediterranean design and decor is influenced by a mix of cultures and styles from countries surrounding the Mediterranean sea, such as Italy, Spain, Greece, France and Morocco. This style of decor should create a feeling of openness, space and simplicity. The rustic textures and natural colors of Mediterranean-style decor create a relaxed, homey atmosphere, and this is an easy look to achieve in any home.
  1. Colors

    • Choose warm, neutral colors for the walls.

Shades of blue and white are common in Mediterranean-style interior design, due to the close proximity of the sea. This style of design is about complementing the surrounding countryside. Shades of green, yellow, lavender and brown are also popular.

Warm burnt oranges, reds and terracotta colors reflect the terracotta tiles and pottery of the Mediterranean region, and splashes of gold and bright colors add extra touches of interest around the room. Don't be afraid to mix several different shades of colors together, as this adds to the texture of the room.

    Floor

    • Terracotta tiles complement the warm-colored walls.

Carpet does not feature in Mediterranean-style design -- the flooring should be a hard surface, such as wood, tiles or flagstones. Dark-stained wooden floors work well with the neutral-color walls, and scattered rugs in bright colors add an authentic feel. Tiles or flagstones in warm terracotta colors add a warm, European feel, and again, use plenty of scattered rugs.

    Furniture

    • Mosaic tiling and wrought-iron furniture sit well alongside dark wooden pieces.

Dark-stained wood features heavily in Mediterranean-style furniture, with designs ranging from rustic to formal in style, often with intricately carved detailing. As with the colors, don't be afraid to mix and match. Moroccan style strongly influences Mediterranean decor, so wrought-iron metalwork can also be used in the furnishings. Mosaic tiling is another Moroccan influence, and this is often incorporated into Mediterranean-style furniture.

    Textiles

    • Large, colorful rugs soften the appearance of tiled floors.

Throws, rugs, cushions, table runners, wall hangings and drapery are all highlighted in Mediterranean-style interiors. This is your chance to add those brighter splashes of color if you desire, but don't overdo it or you lose those typically neutral Mediterranean colors.

Use fabric to soften the overall appearance of your home, as the use of tiles, wrought iron and wood can create a harsh look, especially if your home is not in an area that enjoys the warm Mediterranean weather.

    Accessories

    • Large pottery pieces make a statement while sticking with the simple Mediterranean style.

Large pottery and stone items, such as urns and vases are popular in Mediterranean-style decor, as well as bronze and copper pieces. Introduce the Moroccan-style wrought iron with the use of mirrors, wine racks and decorative wall pieces, and don't forget the artwork -- bold and contrasting is the way to go with wall art. Items that reflect the ocean are also popular -- introduce seashells and decorative hanging pieces, such as seahorses and fish for this look.
