Furniture Ideas for Small Studios

A small studio apartment or living space poses many challenges -- furnishing it is only one of many. There are many theories of design when it comes to decorating a small space, but selecting the furniture that works best with both your lifestyle and personal taste is the best option.
  1. Multifunctional Furniture

    • Select pieces of furniture that serve more than one purpose; for example, choose a table that works as both a game table or desk and a formal dining table. Use a bookcase that also functions as a storage cupboard. Nearly every piece of furniture can have a dual purpose; coffee tables and ottomans often open up to double as built-in storage pieces. Choose couches with built-in beds to save space and to have a place for your guests to sleep when they visit.

    Large Furniture

    • Rather than fill your small apartment with small pieces of furniture, instead focus on larger pieces of "statement" furniture to anchor your smaller space. Select, for example, a large king-size or a bold four-poster bed in your bedroom area, which will serve as the focal point for this area and will automatically pull the eye to it and make the room look bigger than it actually is. In the living room area of your studio, choose larger pieces of furniture, such as an overstuffed couch or a heavy leather chair. Again, these big pieces of furniture will anchor the room and act as a focal piece for the room.

    Storage

    • Purchase plenty of pieces that act as both furniture and storage. Bookcases work in a multitude of ways; large, oversized pieces can divide areas of your studio into separate rooms or be set against walls. Store unsightly items in baskets that can easily be stowed away. Credenzas, armoires and other portable storage items with doors are effective solutions for items that need to be put away behind doors.

    Smaller, Portable Pieces

    • Accent your larger pieces with smaller pieces, such as chairs and a table that can be easily moved, to fill out your décor. Pieces that can be moved out of the way when necessary make it easy to transform your space at a moment's notice if need be. In this way, you can quickly move your furniture around and turn your study area into your formal dining area in just a few minutes.
