Ideas for Sports Decor & Paint Colors for a Boy's Room

For the boy who lives for all things sports-related, there's no better bedroom motif than one that reflects this interest. You can give your son the sports-themed bedroom he desires by bringing together the graphic elements of the sports he plays or loves. Using his favorite sports star or team as your guide, this room will be ready for play in no time.
  1. Team Colors

    • Most decorating schemes use a color palette to help set the decorative tone for the room. For the sports-minded boy, his favorite team's colors offer a logical starting point. If your son is a Dallas Cowboys fan, choose blue, white and metallic silver as his bedroom colors. If he dreams of shooting hoops for the Los Angeles Lakers, choose purple and gold for his room. Select one of the team's colors as the dominant color in his room, and make the other shade the accent color. Using the Cowboys as an example, paint his walls blue, and accent the door jambs with white or silver.

    Sports Shadow Boxes

    • Shadow boxes give you the chance to make a nice display from some of your son's favorite sports memorabilia. They come in a variety of sizes and depths, allowing you to include some very thin or very bulky items in each box. Some possible items to include are the ball cap and glove from his first years in little league, collectible sports cards, golf balls and golf tees, photos of his favorite sports star or his favorite athlete's jersey.

    Decoupage

    • Some of the most interesting-looking sports graphics were in old illustrated magazines and catalogs. To give your son's room a more traditional look, use the decoupage craft technique to make these images into wallpaper for his room. Start by making some quality photocopies of the images you'd like to use for the project. Cut them out; including the writing from the catalog adds an authentic touch. Create a mixture of water and craft glue, using equal parts of each. Using a sponge brush, coat the backs of the graphics with the glue mixture, and stick them on the wall. Give the wall a couple of days to dry. Once it's done drying, make some more of the mixture to spread it on top of the pictures, which gives them a shiny, protective coat.

    Sports Locker

    • Spending time in a locker room is as common as spending time on the field for boys who play sports. You can bring the locker motif into your boy's bedroom by buying a free-standing sports locker to use as a closet. These are usually made of metal and come with a set of lockers. You can order these lockers for a couple hundred dollars.
