Ideas on How to Decorate for Romantic Teen Rooms

Decorating a bedroom for a teenager often seems like an overwhelming prospect. It is an age group with constantly fluctuating tastes, which means the space must be adaptable and something a teen can grow into. The space must serve as a soothing escape for sleep, a place for homework, reading and other activities. A romantic style is ideal for teen spaces, as it utilizes colors and materials ideal for the age group, and is easy to adapt as style tastes change.
  1. Colors

    • Wall color is perhaps the key ingredient for creating a romantic style in a teen bedroom. Generally, the palette includes lots of pastels -- shades of pink, purple, yellow, green and blue -- accented with deeper hues. The colors in a romantic-style room should be geared for calming and relaxation, which means avoiding bright, vivid colors. Purple is often associated with our romantic side, while shades of blue are soothing and promote harmony. Neutrals, including taupe, beige and cream, are ideal background colors, particularly for spaces with limited natural light. Using a neutral backdrop also means the space is easier to change and adapt as needed.

    Materials and Texture

    • Romantic style is created using rich, luxurious materials to promote comfort, and an assortment of fabric types to create texture. The style calls for satin, velvet and sheer materials that evoke elegance and comfort. Think anything that is soft on the skin. Bedding should be plush, in tones that complement the walls, and include a wide selection of pillows in varying shades, shapes and sizes to add texture. Draperies should include a combination of sheer and silk, taffeta or velvet panels. As with other fabric pieces, drapes should complement bedding and wall colors. A valance across the top complete with beading or fringe will complete the look.

    Accents

    • A faux-fur rug is an ideal addition to a romantic room, adding comfort to the floor and texture to the space. Standard romantic lighting is soft, which isn't ideal for a teen bedroom, as it may not provide a comfortable environment for reading and doing homework. An easy, adaptable solution is to invest in a floor or overhead lamp with multiple settings. A desk lamp, as well as a lamp on each night table, will help keep work spaces well lit. Candelabras, preferably in wrought iron, are a must. Candles in floral or fruit scents will help create a calm atmosphere. Mirrors in ornate frames will add to the look, and help reflect light in spaces that lack natural light.

    Greenery

    • Flowers are an essential finishing touch to a romantic space. Real potted plants aren't always ideal for indoor locations, so the silk variety is a suitable alternative. Mix muted whites and creams with vivid reds, yellows and oranges to create texture, or keep things more muted with soft pinks, purples and blues. Hydrangeas, tulips, roses and daisies are ideal flower selections, and each come in a variety of color options, widely available in silk from most craft stores. Additionally, a few potted plants or small trees will pull the look together and bring a bit of nature inside. Bamboo is an excellent choice for most homes and is extremely easy to care for. Ficus, acanthus, bonsai and Japanese maples are all widely available, living or silk.
