Hang sports signs around the room. Vintage tin baseball signs give a pub-style sports bar effect. Posters that advertise races or tournaments are another option. Don't overlook the humorous sports signs written on poster board by those crazy fans. Make up your own quips and quotes for these signs, poking fun at players and sports in general.
Frame sports jerseys in shadow boxes. Hang these jerseys above the fireplace if the room boasts one, or alternate the large frames with some of the game posters you hang. Include a small placard at the bottom of each frame that briefly explains the importance of the jersey, from who wore it to when the number was retired.
Display sports memorabilia in various places around the room. Keep collector's items in an enclosed curio cabinet. Turn sports trophies into bookends. Lean a surfboard in the corner, or hang it horizontally above the sofa. Hang a net in another corner that holds a plethora of sports balls like basketballs, footballs and baseballs. Crisscross hockey sticks and golf clubs on the base of the bar.
Include a large-screen television on which to watch the games and play video games. Organize your gaming system, games, videos and CDs in an entertainment center. Use surround sound so friends can hear the sportscasters, even when the conversations grow in decibel levels.
Purchase comfortable furniture. An overstuffed sofa allows people to sink back into the cushions and relax while enjoying the game. Use large bean bags that offer easy mobility for guests who are playing video games or just lounging. Bar stools with backs encourage friends to stick around at the bar for a while without growing too uncomfortable in their seats.
Recycle sports equipment. Place a cordless phone in a baseball glove, or serve chips in an upside-down football helmet. A skateboard gives mobility to snacks along the bar, and bowling pins work well as doorstops. Turn a golf bag into an umbrella stand, or hang coats from a miniature football goal.
Add at least one game table. Set up a poker table in the corner to enjoy with friends. If there is room in your home bar, add a pool table. If space is an issue, a shuffleboard table, while quite long, can be easily pushed against a wall; you only need enough room to push the pucks.
