How to Make Deer Head Decor

Deer head decor does not necessarily require actual deer heads. Many people have captured a rustic feel and majestic beauty in home decor by designing and making their own deer heads out of various craft objects. Incorporating faux deer heads allows you to work around the decor you already have, rather than trying to make a room work around the deer. Make paper mache deer heads to use for projects of various shapes, sizes and colors.

Instructions

  1. Form the Deer Head

    • 1

Ball up newspaper and begin to form it into the shape of a deer head. Aim for the general shape of wide at the top and tapering into the snout. Use tape to help hold the shape you've created.

    • 2

Roll more newspaper into long, thin log-type shapes that are slightly wider at one end than the other to form the antlers. Tape the wider ends to the top of the head where antlers would be, and add other, smaller log shaped pieces to them to make the branches of the antlers.

    • 3

Add details, such as ears, eyes and a squared off snout if desired, and ensure that everything is taped in place for the shape you want.

    • 4

Mix one part flour with two parts water to make a paper mache paste that has the consistency of glue. You may adjust the paste as needed with more flour or water.

    • 5

Cut or tear 1-inch by 1-foot strips of newspaper, and apply one by one to the deer head after thoroughly covering each in the paper mache paste. Cover the entire head and antlers in three or four layers of pasted newspaper, allowing the layers to dry in between applications.

    • 6

Finish the paper mache with a final layer of paper towel strips instead of more newspaper. The paper towel will be easier to paint over when dry.

    • 7

Paint the deer head and antlers with as much or as little detail as you'd like. For a subtle, artsy look, use one color for the entire head. For children, adding features like eyes and a nose might be more entertaining. You may need to use a few layers of paint to fully cover the paper mache.
