How to Zen My Apartment

Zen is a Japanese philosophy that aims to create inner peace and serenity and teaches the user to vitalize the self through meditation. However, in terms of home decor, Zen can help you create a simplistic and calming living environment. You should only attempt to Zen your apartment if you want to have a minimalistic home. It may work especially well in a small apartment, because the lack of clutter will make the space look bigger.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your walls in neutral tones, such as white, cream or beige.

    • 2

Remove all clutter and unnecessary objects from your apartment. Clear off all flat surfaces, leaving only one of two items such as a lamp or a plant. Keep furniture to a minimum and ensure that the furniture you do have is utilitarian with low lines.

    • 3

Decorate your apartment with items relating to the five elements of nature: earth, water, fire, metal and wood. Items such as a bonsai tree, an indoor waterfall or a decorative candle are good examples. Avoid plastic items, because plastic isn't a natural element.

    • 4

Buy cushions and other accessories in subdued, earthy shades such as dark green, brown or blue. These colors are reminiscent of nature and fit in with the Zen style.

    • 5

Hang simple artwork on your walls if you want to keep your rooms from looking boring. Leave at least one wall bare and put just one piece of art on the other walls. Paintings, drawings or photographs of natural scenes are especially fitting.
