How to Divide a Room for Privacy

If your home has open spaces, you may wish to divide it into private areas. Lofts and studio apartments usually offer one large space. Dividing the room allows you to create a closed area for a bedroom. In cases where two occupants share a room, dividing the space will provide each person with more privacy.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the ceiling to the point on the wall at which you want the curtain to hang. Mark the spot with a pencil. Repeat with the opposite wall.

    • 2

Drill a small pilot hole into one of the marks. Push in an anchor and screw in a hook. Repeat on the other wall.

    • 3

Measure the length from one hook to the other. Use a cable cutter to cut aircraft cable to that measurement plus 2 feet.

    • 4

Form one end of the cable into a loop. Slip a wire rope clip over the end and turn the bolts to secure it. Slip the loop over one of the hooks in the wall.

    • 5

Turn the screws on the turnbuckle to expand it and attach it to the other hook.

    • 6

Stretch the cable from the looped end across the room to the turnbuckle. Cut the cable, leaving an extra 6 inches.

    • 7

Slip the turnbuckle off of the hook and insert the cable end through the screws. Secure it with a rope clip. Attach the turnbuckle to the hook. Tighten the turnbuckle until the cable is taut. Trim any excess wire.

    • 8

Slip the looped end of the cable off the hook. Thread the curtains through the cable. Reattach the cable to the hook. Adjust the curtains so that they spread evenly over the cable.
