How to Make an Origami Plate

Origami (folding paper) is a traditional Japanese art that dates back to the seventeenth century. Neither scissors nor glue is required, for the goal is to turn a mere sheet of paper into a sculpture simply through folding. With the help of origami, today you can discard your boring paper plates and turn a colorful sheet of square paper into an elaborate plate that evokes both creativity and the beauty of the Japanese culture.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the sheet of paper horizontally. Unfold it. Fold it again, this time vertically, and then unfold it. The creases formed should now have divided the sheet of paper into four squares.

    • 2

Fold the first half of the paper horizontally, downwards, to touch the crease that crosses the sheet horizontally. Repeat the step, but this time with the bottom half of the sheet. Unfold it. The creases should have divided the sheet of paper into four horizontal rectangles and a line that vertically crosses the sheet of paper in the middle.

    • 3

Fold the right half of the sheet and fold it, so it will touch the vertical crease that crosses the sheet. Repeat the same step, this time with the left half. Unfold them. The creases should now have formed sixteen identical squares on the sheet of paper.

    • 4

Lift the upper right vertex and fold the sheet so it will touch the lower left vertex. Unfold it. Then lift the upper left vertex and fold the sheet so it will touch the lower right vertex. Unfold it. You should now have two diagonal creases crossing the sheet.

    • 5

Fold in the diagonal lines that cross each of the four small squares that form the vertices. Fold them backwards (the bottom half) to turn your sheet into an octagon.
