Place throw rugs in the various rooms of the apartment. It doesn't matter if the room has carpet or not. A soft throw rug can make a room look more homey and comfortable. Use thick rugs that are comfortable to lie on. If your apartment has a skylight in the living room, place a comfortable rug on the floor beneath it. You and a date can lie on the rug at night and watch the stars.
Use spray cleaner on the walls where you want to hang posters. Wipe the walls clean. Wait for them to dry (20 to 30 minutes).
Spread the posters on a flat surface, picture-side down. Choose posters that show a romantic scene or items associated with romance. These include flowers, sunsets, couples and colored designs. Press a nickel-sized piece of sticky tack to the back of each corner of the poster. Pick up the poster and press it against the wall. Push on the sticky tack through the poster to adhere the poster in place. Repeat with all posters.
Remove some of the light bulbs in the apartment light fixtures. Put soft-pink bulbs in the fixtures. Do not use pink bulbs in areas you need bright light, such as around a desk or in the kitchen. Colored lighting can make studying harder to do and create eye strain.
Set up candle dishes and flameless candles around the apartment. Place them on end tables, coffee tables and shelves. If your landlord prohibits lit candles, you can put regular, scented candles in the dishes so long as you don't light them. Romantic scents include lavender, lilac, rose, orchid, amber and vanilla.
Set up colored wastebaskets or fabric crates around the apartment for storage. Fabric crates create a softer look, but any colorful bin will help create a romantic mood. If you set up a lavender, cloth laundry bin in the bedroom, for example, the color adds to the decor, plus the container has a useful purpose.
