How to Decorate a Staircase for Formal Photographs

Hanging formal photographs along your staircase can add an elegant look and display pictures of those you care about. Choose an odd amount of pictures, as odd groupings are more pleasing to the eye than an even number. Hang the formal photographs so they flow with the stairs, allowing your eyes to easily follow the pictures and enjoy each one rather than hanging them haphazardly, which will take away from the formal nature of the photographs.

Instructions

    • 1

Select frames and mats that match or share a similar design for a cohesive, formal look. The frames can be different shapes and sizes, such as oval, round and rectangle, if they all have the same finish or overall style. For example, mixing cherry wood frames with gold frames might look awkward, whereas a cherry oval frame and a cherry rectangular frame will flow together. Stick to one mat color to keep the arrangement formal looking.

    • 2

Arrange the pictures on the floor to see how they will look together. Place any round or oval pictures in the center to anchor the arrangement, as those shapes draw the eye first. Use the same size pictures or frames and place them at even intervals, no more than 3 inches apart. Using different sized frames or pictures will lend a casual look to the arrangement.

    • 3

Measure from the stair that will sit directly beneath the center of the picture. The photographs should gradually climb the wall at the same rate as the stairs. The center of each photo should be just above eye level. Start with the center photograph and measure up from the center stair.

    • 4

Mark wall lightly with a pencil so you know exactly where your hooks or nails will go. Leave enough space for the frame and a 3-inch gap between the pictures, then measure from the stair up to mark the next spot. Repeat the process working out from the center position until you have marked enough spots for each of your formal photographs. Accurate measurements will help achieve a formal look.

    • 5

Hammer a nail or picture hook into the wall at each marking. Larger, heavier frames may require larger nails or multiple hooks. Secure the pictures properly to avoid damaging your pictures or injuring anyone on the stairs.

    • 6

Hang the pictures so they fall flat against the wall. Look at the arrangement from different angles to make sure the arrangement appears formal and that you can adequately enjoy each picture in the arrangement.
