How to Keep Covered Screened Patio Cool in Summer

A covered, screened patio offers a restful retreat, but roasting inside the space offers little reprieve. Although the covered patio provides shelter from the blazing sun, rays can filter through during certain times of the day, making the area uncomfortable. With a few simple items you can keep your outdoor space cool and comfortable during those hot summer days.

Things You'll Need

  • Bamboo shades or porch blinds
  • Ceiling or floor fan
  • Fountain
  • Large potted plants
  • Low-watt yellow light bulbs

Instructions

    • 1

Install bamboo shades or porch blinds to block out the sun's rays and keep the space cooler. When the sun stops filtering through, pull the shades back up to enjoy the outdoor view.

    • 2

Install a ceiling fan in the center of the outdoor patio, or place an oscillating fan at one end of the porch to circulate air and cool the space.

    • 3

Set a small outdoor table fountain on the patio. The refreshing sound of bubbling water helps promote a cooling atmosphere.

    • 4

Place large potted plants around the perimeter of the patio. Large plants block the sun's rays while allowing cool breezes to filter through.

    • 5

Use low-watt yellow bulbs for outdoor lighting at night. The yellow bulbs attract fewer bugs than white lights, and the lower wattage gives off less heat.
