Elements of Victorian-Style Baths

Victorian-era décor exhibited a feel of elegance, curved lines, luxurious fabrics, ornate lighting fixtures and a general feeling of opulence. Bathrooms were not immune to this style and were often a decorative showcase. A Victorian-style bathroom has large-scale furnishings, plush accessories and exquisite small details throughout the room.
  1. Bathtub

    • Traditional Victorian-style bathtubs were built in to extravagant, heavy wood encasements that were intricately carved and decorated. Modern Victorian design moves away from the mixture of wood next to the water-filled bathtub and instead leans toward curved, opulent bathtubs, such as clawfoot tubs. For a true Victorian feel, look for feet with engraved or carved metal details and gilt finishes. The outside finish of the tub can be painted to complement your décor or left in its natural state. Fixtures in brass and gold are most commonly seen in the Victorian style.

    Sink

    • Pedestal sinks that stand on a column, leaving pipe work exposed, are often seen in Victorian décor. These sinks, though simple by themselves, are outfitted with gilded or brass fixtures. To hide the exposed pipes, a decorative, ruffled skirt is sometimes attached to the bowl of the sink in a rich fabric that coordinates with the color and style of the rest of the bathroom.

    Accessories

    • Victorian bathrooms are rich in accessories, such as gilded mirrors, wooden side tables, wall art framed in elegant mahogany frames, and soap dishes made from delicate porcelain. Patterned wallpaper provides a backdrop for these accessories and sets the tone for the entire room. Richly painted walls in deep or bright colors gives the space a vibrant feel. Wooden appliqués, glass knobs and intricate carvings add detail to the furnishings in this space.

    Linens

    • Linens are rich and plush. Choose area rugs in thick cottons that absorb water and keep feet warm. Towels should be easily accessible and thick. For window treatments and shower curtains, consider substantial fabrics, such as velvet, satin or taffeta. When hanging window treatments and shower curtains, use ornate, decorative rods that complement the look of your bathroom.

    Lighting

    • Lighting ranges from soft and subtle to ornate and elegant. Consider wall sconces with shades covered in rich fabric and lush trims for the walls next to your mirrors. For overhead lighting, a crystal or fabric-lampshade chandelier adds an element of drama to the bathroom, especially when placed directly over a focal piece of the bathroom, such as a clawfoot tub.
