How to Make an Outer Space Bedroom for Kids

Decorating a child's outer space-themed bedroom sparks the imagination and brings the images of astronauts, stars, planets, the solar system, galaxies and constellations to life every night. Also, add whimsical pictures or wall hangings of aliens, UFOs, outer space creatures or planets made by your child for a personal flair. Work with your child to transform the entire room to look out of this world.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls of the room with deep blue or black latex paint to create an image of open night skies. Apply the paint with a roller or paintbrush, and allow the walls to dry thoroughly. If you feel the shade is too dark for your child's bedroom, select a lighter shade such as powder blue, or paint only the central wall a dark color, leaving the others free to decorate with space-themed wall hangings or murals.

    • 2

Paste glow-in-the-dark stickers on the ceiling and over the upper edges of the wall to add depth to the room. Alternatively, apply glow-in-the-dark paint within the outlines of star-shaped stencils using a small brush, and allow them to dry.

    • 3

Outline an alien spaceship, a UFO or a space shuttle on a large piece of craft foam or cardboard, and then cut along the edges. Also, draw different parts of the ship, such as windows, the control panel or the occupant's name, for instant personalization. Paint the cutout in your child's desired color. Stick lengths of double-sided tape to the back of the cutout, and stick it over the headboard, the side of a study table, a sealed door or a corner of the wall.

    • 4

Construct a mobile solar system using craft foam balls spray-painted in different colors. Push a hook through a side of each ball, and secure it to the ceiling or a window frame using fishing line.

    • 5

Cover the bed in space-themed bedding available at home department stores. Also, use drapery and upholstery in colors that complement the walls or with prints of planets, astronauts, spaceships or other space-related elements.

    • 6

Print images of aliens, planets, spaceships, "Star Wars" characters or constellations on a large-format printer. Insert the images in silver frames, and mount them strategically on the walls or over bare corners.

    • 7

Add space-related accessories to bring the theme together. Spread a rug with images of planets or stars on the floor and star-shaped cushions on the floor or seats. Replace existing lampshades with space shuttle lampshades. Place a real or toy telescope near the window.
