Decorating Ideas for a Farm-Themed Bedroom for Adults

Distressed Furniture

• Distressed furniture can create an authentic look for a farmhouse bedroom. You can hunt around at tag sales, flea markets or antique shops for genuine articles, or give your existing furniture a worn, weathered makeover. Use sandpaper or a palm sander to scuff the surface of wooden items, such as dressers, vanities or nightstands, to remove areas of the finish. You can slightly distress your furniture for a subtle look, or take off most of the finish for a more dramatic effect. Both stained and painted items can be distressed, but you may need to change the grit of your sandpaper depending on the finish, with finer grit sandpapers giving a smoother look. If you have a painted wrought iron bed frame, you can take off some of its finish for a worn look as well.

Paneling

• Another way to give your bedroom an authentic farmhouse feel is to add wooden paneling to the walls. Beadboard is the traditional option, but you can choose any style that you like. The paneling can go from floor to ceiling, or you may opt to install it halfway up on the walls. If you choose to use it as wainscoting, try painting it in a bright white shade and using a muted red, blue, green or yellow for the top portion of the wall. You can also pair beadboard paneling with wallpaper in a floral or striped pattern, if you prefer.

Patterned Bedding

• A wrought iron bed is an ideal addition to a farmhouse style room, but you can make any bed feel like it belongs down on the farm by choosing the right bedding. Sheets with a large floral pattern, particularly one that features roses, are an ideal option, but you can also use a checkered or striped pattern if you prefer a simpler look. A patchwork quilt can be used in place of a bedspread or comforter, or you can lay it across the foot of the bed to add pattern to a solid bedding set.

Antiques

• Decorating your bedroom with antique items can add character and charm. You can display ceramic milk jugs or pitchers on your dresser or bookcase, or showcase China plates in blue or red patterns on the walls. Framed needlework samples are a fun wall decoration as well. Even a set of vintage leather-bound books set out on a bookcase, desk or nightstand can give the room an authentic farmhouse feel.
