How to Decorate With Blue Colored Walls

Blue walls give a room a cool refreshing look. A blue room is reminiscent of the seaside with its water, sunshine, cool breeze, sand and sea grass. Let wall colors set the stage for decor that will make you feel relaxed and calm. Introduce other beach colors and fabrics that look and feel natural to complement the wall color. Decorate and accessorize with a shore theme and your room will be an inviting refuge from your busy days.

Instructions

  1. Living Room

    • 1

Choose a sofa upholstered with a light, natural looking fabric. A sandy earth tone would be a good choice. The size should be in scale with your room. Add several decorative pillows made from patterned cotton or linen fabric that reflect a seaside palette.

    • 2

Place overstuffed club chairs opposite the sofa. Chairs upholstered in a fabric with soft sage florals or plaid prints would be a pleasing contrast to a plain couch. Matching ottomans add a relaxing element.

    • 3

Hang floor-to-ceiling sheer drapery panels in the windows. Use a flowing fabric such as natural linen and allow panels to puddle on the floor. Keep the style casual with a simple decorative rod and clips to hold the drapes.

    • 4

Paint vintage occasional tables with sage, white or a very pale shade of sand. The tables can be a mix of styles. If painted the same color, they will have a cohesive look.

    • 5

Scatter a few area rugs on a wooden floor. Sisal or jute rugs add to the seaside flavor of the room.

    • 6

Accessorize your room with seaside-themed decorations. Decorate tabletops with wooden shorebird decoys and groups of large seashells. Place pieces of sea glass in a clear glass bowl to display on a coffee table. Decorate the walls with artwork that depicts scenes of the beach or boats. Fill a large oak basket with gnarled driftwood and set it under a table.

    The Bedroom

    • 7

Paint wooden beds white. This will be a refreshing contrast to the blue walls.

    • 8

Dress beds with luxurious white linens. Spread the tops of the beds with quilts designed with soft florals, striped or windowpane plaid fabrics. Mix and match these coordinating prints with accent pillows arranged at the head of the beds.

    • 9

Paint a four-legged vintage table a pale sunny yellow or soft sage to use as a bedside stand. Place a simple crystal-reading lamp on top with a crystal vase filled with daisies or blue hydrangeas beside it. Paint a dresser with a color that contrasts with the bedside stand. Add crystal knobs to the drawers.

    • 10

Hang long sheer panels over the window. Add a white shade to ensure privacy.

    • 11

Accessorize the room with oak baskets used for storage. Place a large basket under the bedside table to hold magazines. Paint a small vintage table white and place it near a window. Use plants set in baskets to decorate the top. Hang artwork on the walls that reflect your color choices. A floral, soft landscape or seaside subject would be pleasing. Fill mason jars with vintage buttons, seashells or bits of vintage lace pieces to decorate an existing shelf. Add a faded cotton braided rug beside the beds.
