Ideas for a Dark Leather Couch in a Living Room

Dark leather couches add a masculine feel to a room. When paired with darker colors, a room can feel more like an office or a den and less like a relaxed living space. For creating a living space that shows balance, you’ll need to decorate using complementary colors and furniture that will both relate to the dark leather couch but also even out the ornate appearance.
  1. Paint

    • One of the fastest ways to pull the dark tones from a room and remove the emphasis of a dark leather sofa is with well-colored walls. Begin by selecting a color that is either analogous or complementary with the brown leather. The analogous colors would be purple and red whereas the complementary color is green. Using purple and red as a base wall paint will create a warm-toned room while green will create an earthy feel.

    Furniture

    • No couch is an island unto itself, so you’ll need to pick some furniture that will finish off the room. Start by selecting a chair with dark wood accents but a strikingly lighter fabric, such as cream. Choose a coffee table made of either wood or stone to complement the natural feel of the leather, and pick one smaller piece of leather furniture that has a different style and color, such as a blue leather dining room chair.

    Flooring

    • If you are seeking an earthy look, choose medium-toned wood flooring to bring in a further earthy feel to the room. You can then lighten the room with cream or white accent rugs. For a warm room, select light-colored wood or tan-colored wall-to-wall carpet. The couch should be the darkest thing in the room.

    Lighting

    • Natural lighting is a must to remove the den or office appearance that the sofa naturally gives off. If the room has plenty of windows, use sheer curtains so that as much light as possible shines through, but you still have plenty of privacy. For a room without many windows, use studio lighting to enhance the room’s dark tone.
