How to Break Up a Long Living Room

Dividing a long living room into separate spaces requires making each area unique in functionality and decor. Long living rooms make for awkward furniture arrangements when attempting to have one conversation area, but dividing and conquering the narrow space allows you to make two to three distinctive spaces. Arranging individual coves inside a long living room allows you different uses for one large space.

Instructions

    • 1

Place two chairs with a round table between them in a section of the long living room for an intimate conversation area. A small ottoman in front of one chair offers a place to lay tired feet or set magazines.

    • 2

Set a chaise lounge at one end of the room or by a window for a place to relax or read a book. Place the lounge at a diagonal with a small end table beside it for books or beverages.

    • 3

Arrange a seating area around a large focal point in the room, such as a fireplace or television. Arrange a sofa facing the focal point with chairs and end tables completing the space.

    • 4

Position an oriental screen or a 4-foot-high bookcase in the living room to separate different sections. These dividers offer a way of segmenting spaces without overwhelming the area.

    • 5

Place a hutch, a display table such as a Hoosier cabinet or buffet table, an antique dresser or other unique furniture along the wall at one end of the room or to fill an open space in a corner. Providing extraordinary furniture its own section of the room showcases the decor while separating it from other areas of the room.
