Ideas for Decorating an Adult's Bedroom Like a Castle

Feeling like royalty in the bedroom is only a few decorating tips away. Some women never grow out of the need to be a princess. Some men like the idea of being king of their castle. These feelings and fantasies come closer to reality with a castle-decorated bedroom. Whether just for fun and game time between a couple or a dream room for a medieval enthusiast, castle bedrooms are not just for children.
  1. Colors

    • One of the first points to consider when transforming a bedroom into a castle-themed room is color. Many castles of the past and present are owned and occupied by royalty. Certain colors signify royalty in various cultures. Purple, possibly the color most related to royalty, along with blue, red and green, is among these colors. Do research on a country of choice to find the right royal color for walls and bedding. Keeping with the royal theme, plan to incorporate gold or silver into the decor. These colors are sometimes associated with wealth, much like owning a castle.

    Flooring

    • In Medieval castles, polished wood floors or thick carpeting would not be an option. To keep a bedroom in a castle theme, think along the lines of slate, or stone, floors. These tiles may run on the expensive side. For those on a budget, choose vinyl tile designed to appear as stone or in a dull gray or black color. In some countries, tapestry rugs adorned the floors of castles. Find a large print rug to match the room colors.

    Bed

    • Get visions of ancient romance with a velvet-draped canopy bed. Art and fantasy movies sometimes depict royal bedrooms with large canopy beds. The beds are draped with heavy materials lined with gold fringes and thick rope tiebacks. Replicate this look in a modern bedroom by selecting a canopy bed to fit the room. While a large bed may seem more castle-like, a smaller bed will suffice in a small space. Use full-length canopy covering completely around the bed to match the surrounding decor.

    Lighting

    • Many castles of the world were built prior to the invention or common use of electricity, which meant that lighting of the room required more than a bulb and a switch. Bring this concept into a castle theme bedroom with candle holders or a candle chandelier. Hang large, decorative candle holders on the walls around the room. A multi-candle holder may be the focal point of one wall while single candle holders are spaced throughout the remaining walls. Handheld candle holders or freestanding holders become decorations for table and furniture tops.
