How to Decorate Split-Level Basements

A split-level or bi-level home differs from traditional houses in that it is split between two floors. The entryway to a split-level home has two small stairways: one leads up and one leads down. The upper level of a split-level home typically features the kitchen and bedrooms, while the basement level may house a family or game room. Split-level basements often have narrower ceilings than traditional basements. Whether you're decorating a single basement room or the entire floor, there are a number of ways to make your basement a pleasant place to spend time.

Instructions

    • 1

Place removable rugs in your split-level basement instead of traditional wall-to-wall flooring. Basements may be prone to mold growth and dampness, so choose carpets you can easily remove and clean if mold or water damage becomes an issue.

    • 2

Paint your walls bright, lively colors instead of darker tones. Your split-level basement may have less natural light than the upper level of your home, so brighten it up with lightly colored paint.

    • 3

Hang horizontally long pictures and decorations on your walls. Horizontal wall hangings make the basement room look longer and help the room appear to be bigger than it actually is.

    • 4

Place shelves throughout your basement. Floor-to-ceiling shelves in the family room can house books, board games and pictures. Floating shelves in the bathroom provide a place for candles. Incorporate shelves into your laundry room as well, for cleanly folded laundry and cleaning supplies.

Include comfortable furniture, cushions and blankets in your family room. Guests will likely spend some time reading or watching television in your split-level basement, so choose items that will make your visitors comfortable.
