How to Create Authentic English Georgian Wall Paneling

Georgian style refers to the decorating style made popular by king George I of England. Georgian style is actually a combination of early French and Italian style, especially reflecting the style of Italian artist Palladio and French rococo with a mild oriental touch. Georgian paneling involves stained panels installed at dado height and carved molding with crisp scrolls, flowers (especially peonies and chrysanthemums) and ribbons. Things to avoid with Georgian style are grape vines, figurines and complex carvings.

Instructions

    • 1

Lightly sand the wood panels, removing any imperfections from the surface. Wipe the surface down with a tack cloth to remove all of the remaining sawdust.

    • 2

Paint the wood stain onto the panels and then buff the residue off. Let the wood dry for the manufacturer’s recommended time.

    • 3

Paint the wood with a layer of varnish to seal the panels. This will help the panels last longer and not discolor. Apply a second layer of varnish after sanding if desired. Let the panels try completely before installing.

    • 4

Program your desired molding design into the carving machine for the molding strips. An excellent Georgian design would consist of a ribbon and flower combination going across the molding.

    • 5

Once the carving machine finishes the design, sand off any rough edges and wipe with a tack cloth.

    • 6

Paint the molding with a coat of off-white paint and allow to dry. Georgian molding was carved from plaster and left with the natural plaster color exposed, so use a flat paint to emulate the look of plaster.

    • 7

Program a crisp line design into the carving machine for the baseboards. Sand off any rough edges and wipe with a tack cloth. The baseboards can either be stained or painted to match the wall.

    • 8

Install the baseboards, placing finishing nails every 6 inches.

    • 9

Install the paneling so that it sits against the baseboards and goes up to 3-foot dado height. Secure with finishing nails positioned in each corner.

    • 10

Install the molding along the top of the room.
