Bohemian, Antique Indian Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Bohemian bedrooms are a chic assortment of eclectic styles. This decorating motif combines different textures and colors to create one charming, cohesive look. Bohemian rooms draw inspiration and pieces from a range of different sources, but one of the most common is Indian -- specifically, antique Indian elements. Incorporate inspiration from this style of design into your bohemian bedroom.
  1. Furnishings

    • When furnishing your bedroom, look for dark stained woods. These will help balance the bold color scheme that is typical in Indian and bohemian homes. Along with dark woods, look for upholstered pieces that feature colors and prints from Indian designs. For example, look to floral or geometric shapes and religious prints. Do not be afraid to combine different prints and textures, even if they don't match. The end result will be cohesive and welcoming.

    Beddings

    • The bed is the focal point of the room, so it is your opportunity to incorporate Indian and bohemian style into the decor. One way to do this is with decorative tapestry. In India, there is a special screen-printing process known as batik. Look for this type of screen-printed bedding or tapestries that reproduce the same effect. Couple an antique patchwork quilt with more modern pillow shams, such as ones that feature metallic embroidery or lace trim.

    Color Palette

    • The colors are vibrant in Indian decor. While some palettes rely on eye-catching jewel tones such as sapphire, ruby, emerald, amethyst and garnet, others rely on more muted versions of these colors. The colors are not pastel, however; they are saturated and warm, especially when combined with deep shades of brown and black. Also, accent with metallic shades of gold, bronze and copper. In a bohemian-influenced room, liberally combine different colors to create a cozy, colorful and inviting space for your bedroom.

    Accessories

    • The accessories will make the room look complete. For this type of bedroom, look to symbols of Indian culture. For example, hang a painting of an elephant with its trunk up. Look for a lamp that has a base in the shape of a Hindu figure, or throw a printed scarf with this imagery over an ordinary lampshade. Hang an iron chandelier over the bed, and dangle Rajasthani birds in the doorway of the space. Accessorize with colored glass and iron pieces.
