How to Change a Cuckoo Clock Pendulum

Cuckoo clocks are distinctive for the sound and presence of a cuckoo and the hallmark appearance of a small wooden Swiss house. However, they are the same as other weight-driven clocks in having a pendulum. The pendulum of a cuckoo clock has a wooden shank with a metal hook at the upper end. The pendulum bob is shaped in the form of a leaf and moves up or down the shank as needed to control the speed of the clock. You can change the pendulum of your cuckoo with no special skills or tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop the pendulum on your cuckoo clock by placing your hand in its path.

    • 2

Remove the old pendulum by raising it up slightly until the shank hook is released from the suspension rod loop. The shank hook and loop are accessed at the bottom of the clock.

    • 3

Install the new pendulum by placing its shank hook in the suspension rod loop. The pendulum bob must be facing forward (toward you).

    • 4

Set the new pendulum in motion with a gentle push to the side using a finger.
