Feng Shui Room Decor

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese belief that arranging and decorating your home in specific ways allow energy to flow, which can enhance various areas of your life, such as your career, health and relationships. There are five elements that make up feng shui principles, which include fire, earth, metal, wood and water. Everything in your home can fall into one or more of these categories depending on the color, shape and material of the object.
  1. Fire

    • Fire is a powerful element, as it can represent passion, energy, creativity and enthusiasm. However, too much fire can increase anger, aggression and impulsiveness. Balance your fire elements with at least one or two others. The bedroom or a place where you want to spark creativity is an ideal place to include a bit more of the fire element than in other rooms. Red, pink, purple and orange are fire colors. Lights, candles, a fireplace, sunlight and animal prints are some objects that represent this element.

    Metal

    • Metal is thought to transmit or conduct energy. Place metal objects in the areas of your home that represent areas you want to increase energy. Some metals, such as copper, are said to have an impact on health. Too much metal, just like too much of any good thing, can attract too much energy and become destructive. Round or oval shapes, rocks and stones can represent metal, along with anything made of metal, such as silver, iron, aluminum or gold. Gold is a powerful metal to increase wealth or money. White, gray, silver and light pastel colors also represent the metal element.

    Water

    • Water can impact your spirituality and emotions. Positive flowing water, such as trickling fountains, can increase communication, wisdom, inspiration and wealth. Wasteful flowing water, such as a running toilet, can signify poor health, loss of money, unbalanced transitions or loneliness. Deep, dark colors -- including black -- and reflective surfaces such as mirrors represent the water element. Water fountains, aquariums and images of water, such as waves or oceans, are other ways to incorporate the water element into your home.

    Wood

    • Wooden objects can increase your creativity, strength, intuition and motivation. An imbalance of wood can have impact if you use too much -- overwhelmed and inflexible -- or too little -- depression or ambivalence. The natural shapes of tree trunks, flowers and leaves are conducive to the wood element. In addition, green and blue are the colors of wood. Plants, trees, flowers -- fresh or silk -- cotton, wood furniture and natural fabrics are items that represent the wood element.

    Earth

    • Earth elements can represent stability and home, making your space feel secure and balanced. Too much of the earth element can create heaviness or boredom while not enough can create a chaotic or disorganized feeling. Use earth tones, such as brown, green or beige, and low, flat surfaces to introduce earth elements to your home. Images of landscapes, clay pots, squares and rectangles can also introduce the earth element to your home.
