Instructions

Measure your bed and determine the size of headboard that you need. You can match your headboard size to a headboard of the same size in a store. Determine the dimensions of a headboard that complements a bed of the size you own. Cut your wood, whether it is a repurposed piece of furniture or new wood, to match this. Repeat this process with the footboard.

Sand the wood and ensure it has a smooth finish if you intend to stain the wood for the bed. Prime it if you intend to paint it. Some prefer to cover the headboard and footboard and give it a personalized look with upholstery. DIY upholstery looks daunting but can be accomplished with relative ease.

Add sponge or foam to the headboard and footboard to give it a comfortable, padded feel. Affix this with upholstery tape. Add your fabric and attach it with a sewing staple gun. Ensure the fabric covers the wood evenly. Repeat this process with the footboard.
