How to Decorate a Kitchen in a Mediterranean Mode

The Mediterranean kitchen is distinguished by the use of warm earth tones, such as terracotta, warm greens, gold, brick red and burnt orange. Accents of deep blue or green provide contrast and a hint of cool among the warm. Wood, stone and tile are prime decorating elements, with dark wooden cabinets, colorfully designed tile backsplashes and stone or tile floors being typical. You can bring the feel of the Mediterranean to your kitchen with a few touches of style or make a drastic change with a complete kitchen makeover.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your walls gold or a soft, warm orange for warm Mediterranean flair. A textured two-tone effect will give depth and interest to the walls, as well as give them an aged appearance.

    • 2

Hang bright copper pots from an overhead rack. Black metal with a metal hanging chain will set off your copper nicely.

    • 3

Look for wrought-iron decorative items, such as wall hangings, plate holders, curtain rods or racks. A black or aged finish will look most authentic.

    • 4

Display a collection of bright majolica pottery or ceramic dishes on open shelves. Glass jars holding pasta or other kitchen staples, braided onions or garlic and canister sets in earth tones or red ceramic are functional and decorative.

    • 5

Cover your floor in natural colors. If you do not have a tile, wood or stone floor, look for a rug that is patterned with earth tones to complement your walls.

    • 6

Hang a few pictures with typical Mediterranean landscapes, pictures of grapes or vineyards, or farm houses.

    • 7

Purchase or make mosaic tile decor pieces and display them on your walls or countertops.

    • 8

Set out dishes and tableware in heavy, muted ceramic. A tablecloth and cloth napkins with a pattern of grapes or vines will complete your table.
