Vibrant fabrics are a key element to Bollywood decor as they are used for everyday saris in India. Use earth and jewel tone colors, such as red, orange, gold, blue and purple in your fabric choices to evoke richness and opulence in the room. Silk is a common fabric choice for an Indian design. Incorporate these fabrics by covering a wall in the fabric, hanging curtains or making a room divider between the adjoining room and the lounge. The room divider will also help to make the entrance into the lounge even more dramatic by requiring guests to navigate their way through the fabric. Pull draperies back with beaded curtain ties or bangle bracelets.
Marigolds are common flowers in Indian designs. Place marigolds in a vase on top of a table, drape garlands from the wall or window or float them in clear bowls filled with decorative stones and water.
A lounge doesn’t require as much lighting as a traditional room. Burn candles and incense to give off a soft, smoky air. Small chandeliers full of Indian beads can light various areas in your lounge.
Lounges require much more seating than a family or living room. Use seating that takes up less space, such as long colorful benches in Indian fabric or ottoman-like pieces called poofs in hand-woven Indian fabric. Traditional Indian floor pillows are another option.
Hang traditional Indian art or contemporary pieces on the walls. Pictures of India or posters are two options. Statues such as Hindu gods are also appropriate pieces of art for a Bollywood design.
A colorful design is at the center of any Bollywood design. Infuse warmth and color with the use of accessories in a variety of colors, including lime green, fuchsia, marigold, chocolate, gold, silver and red. Art pieces can incorporate several of these colors. Large colorful rugs can cover the flooring. Use bright scarves as curtain tiebacks. Attach sequins or faux jewels to the side of picture frames or furniture pieces.
