How to Decorate Around a Sunken Area With a Fireplace

Sunken areas in the home are a few steps lower, to draw visual appeal and separate the area from the rest of the room or space. A sunken area with a fireplace could serve as a formal living room, reading nook or cozy retreat from the other space in the home. Decorating should enhance the sunken area and the fireplace.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls around the sunken area in a complementary color. For example, use the same color but in two shades lighter to give the sunken space a more intimate feeling. Alternatively, use colors that appear in the fireplace surround. If the fireplace has tan and cream tiles around it, use cream on the walls around the sunken area.

    • 2

Position your furniture away from the rail, or area that separates the sunken room from the rest of the space, to avoid blocking the view of the fireplace. If you need to use furniture in the space, choose low items or open shelves that still allow you to see the fireplace. Bulky pieces can overpower the sunken area, taking away from the intimate ambiance created by the fireplace.

    • 3

Tie the rooms together through matching or complementary textiles. Use a runner around the railing, which separates the sunken area from the open space, that matches the rug in front of the fireplace. Add a throw over the railing that matches pillows on a chair in front of the fireplace. Use the same window treatments in both areas.

    • 4

Hang artwork, pictures, sconces or wall sculptures that complement the decor around the fireplace, to visually unify the two spaces. For example, if you have silver candelabras on the fireplace mantel, hang silver candle sconces on the wall above the sunken area. Hang black and white photos in both spaces, or artwork that features the same colors or style of work.

Accessorize the area above the sunken area with items that don't detract from the fireplace. For example, place a few houseplants on the ledge between the higher and sunken areas or set up candles in the same colors as the furniture in front of the fireplace.
