Nautical Bedroom Themes for a Baby Boy

If you have a baby boy, or one due to arrive in the near future, a nautical theme for the bedroom may be on your list of possible decorating schemes. Nautical themes add a cheerful note to rooms and are inexpensive to design. Many stores and specialty shops stock nautical-themed decor items, so you can choose from an array of materials to create just the right look for your little sailor.
  1. Furniture With a Nautical Look

    • For a baby boy’s room, furniture in gloss white will help give the room nautical look and provide a neutral color to carry textiles and accessories that repeat the theme. If you already have wood tones, these too can fit in well with the nautical theme, particularly if you use boats prominently in the decor patterns.

    Nautical Colors

    • Classic nautical colors are predominantly blue and white, with touches of red and even yellow to provide more “pop” for the decor. You can also mix in colors reminiscent of the sea, such as aqua blue, seashell pink and light, sandy tans, according to the FunThemeRoomDecor site. Take advantage of the wide range of natural colors that occur in sea and boating items. Browns and grays can also be included.

    Nautical Prints

    • A number of textile manufacturers make baby items in nautical themes. These items will repeat the blues and whites already present in your room. Flags, divers, dolphins, sailboats and seagulls are often incorporated into prints for nautical-themed rooms. Avoid mixing too many prints together, however, as that gives the room a busy look. Instead, use a solid to repeat the color within the print pattern.

    Adding Accessories

    • Decorators that choose to do a nautical theme for little boys are fortunate in that there are a wide variety of decorative items available that employ boating, seashore and semaphore flags. Anchors, lighthouses and water-themed items can also be used for rooms. Wallpaper and wallpaper borders, posters, decals and murals are all available in nautical themes. Bedspreads, draperies and even lamps and toy boxes in a variety of nautical motifs can help to make the room decor unique.

    Create Your Own Nautical Designs

    • You can also decorate existing pieces of furniture in nautical colors and add your own designs, such as fish, wave patterns and sailboats. Use a high-gloss alkyd or washable latex paint that will stand up to repeated cleaning and heavy use. You can also make your own simple wall art to repeat the theme. Always make sure paints are free of any lead ingredients.
