How to Design a Bedroom in Black & White for a Tween Girl

Black and white stand in strong visual contrast with each other, and in your tween girl's bedroom, this color scheme can either bring out a funky side of her personality or reflect a mellower part of her. It all depends upon how you design the room. A room with a lot of visual drama will use the combination differently than one that's a little more laid back. The way to guarantee that you have the right mix of both shades is to talk with your tween throughout the decorating process. This ensures that the end results will be what she expects.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint a black accent wall. Use a semi-gloss paint. Add white paint to the walls surrounding the accent wall. To add a bit of visual drama, paint white squiggly lines in the accent wall or stencil in a white pattern. The rounded form of the lines will soften the look of the black without completely taking away the visual drama of it.

    • 2

Add a coat of white paint the outsides of the closet doors. Paint the insides of the doors with black chalkboard paint. Hang baskets just inside the door for chalk. This can be a message area or a place for your tween just to doodle and play a bit.

    • 3

Line the insides of the closet with black and white polka dot or striped wallpaper. If your tween would like just a small amount of color in her room, add it in a place like the closet. Paint the shelves hot pink or yellow to play off the black and white.

    • 4

Paint the bed and dresser white. Add black knobs to the dresser.

    • 5

Add a decorative design element to your bed, dresser and desk by stenciling a pattern to them. Try a black stylized version of the fleur di lis or paisley pattern.

    • 6

Get a two-sided bedspread. Look for one side that has a pattern such as zebra stripes and the other with a solid black or white color. When you fold down the side of the comforter that has the pattern on it, it'll provide a decorative contrast to the plain black or white side.

    • 7

Choose plenty of black and white pillows to decorate your tween's bed with. Mix and match patterns by choosing only pillows that have black and white in their print. Mix in solid black or solid white pillows to provide some visual contrast.

    • 8

Paint an armoire white and then cover it with newspaper print. Glue the paper on using the decoupage technique. Then mix water and glue and coat the newspaper covered armoire with this mixture. It'll make the design look polished.

Hang up black and white photos of music or movie stars. Choose white picture frames. Add a few black ceramic music notes to the white walls surrounding the accent wall to enhance a music theme.
