How to Hang Wood Letters on Sheetrock Walls

Wooden letters on a playroom wall or child's bedroom wall can help kids learn to read and create a stimulating environment for them. You can even spell each child's name out in wooden letters. There are other reasons to use a wooden letter on the wall, of course. Perhaps you want to put your family surname's initial over a fireplace or have a favorite saying you want to spell out on a wall.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Locate two areas on the back of the letter to install the mounting hardware and mark them with a pencil dot. For most letters, you will position at least one one-hole wood frame hanger at the top of the letter and for others you'll position two at the top. Letters such as M, N, and T have enough room for two frame hangers at the top of the letter. Letters such as I or O would only have one hanger. Letters such as a P or F should have a hanger as close to the top as possible and a second hanger on one of the horizontal arms.

    • 2

Place the letter face down on a towel. Position the one-hole wood frame hanger so that the round hole is located over the pencil mark.

    • 3

Put the tip of the awl through the hole in the one-hole wood frame hanger and tap it with a hammer to create a dimple in the back of the wooden letter.

    • 4

Replace the awl tip with a #6 screw tip and screw the one-hole wood frame hanger to the back of the letter. Repeat for the second one-hole wood frame hanger.

    • 5

Hold the letter up to the wall in the desired position and locate the top of the triangular hanger at the top of the letter. Insert a finishing nail into the top of the triangular hanger and hammer a finishing nail into the wall at a slight angle to support the hanger.

Adjust the hang of the letter until you are happy with the effect. Locate the second one-hole wood frame hanger on the back of the letter and insert a finishing nail through the top of the triangular hanger. Hammer the finishing nail into the wall at a slight angle.
