Remove any standing items from your platform. Things like newspapers, magazines, car keys, shoes, book bags and laundry baskets have no place on your platform. Put these items away and clear out any remaining clutter so your platform will be neat and free for you to decorate.
Paint the walls behind your platform a different color than the rest of your walls. Branch out and choose something that complements the rest of your walls, yet stands out for visitors. For example, if all of your walls are beige, paint your platform's wall blue or green.
Place a small table or nightstand at the top of your platform with a basket on top. Use this basket for items that will inevitably end up at the top of your stairs whether you want them to or not. For example, your daughter might have a habit of tossing notes from her teacher on the floor. She can now use the basket instead.
Hang interesting artwork on the walls behind the platform. Your wall will already stand out since it's a different color, but establish its sophistication through creative decor. Avoid the traditional family portrait and instead opt for a favorite collection of postcards, decorated plates, your spoon collection, a painting created by a local artist or even a framed map.
