Paint the walls to reflect outer space. Use a medium sky to slate blue on the walls with a darker navy hue on the ceiling. Paint glow-in-the-dark stars and distant glowing planets on the ceiling. Use wall decals of the planets, moons and sun in our solar system on the walls.
Use furniture with a futuristic slant to it, such as pieces made of metal or plastic. Avoid wood tones and opt instead for sleek black and white pieces or those bold modern selections that feature bright colors such as orange and lime green. A sleek kidney shaped desk looks reminiscent of a space ship’s command console, especially if you mount a magnetic board with faux buttons, control screens and maps of the galaxy above it.
Use black, navy or gray bedding. Solid colored bedding is generally of a higher quality than gimmicky themed pieces with space graphics, and the right colors will keep the bed in line with the theme while setting you up for easy redecorating down the road as kids grow older. Sheets and throw pillows featuring stars and moons or quirky aliens will add to the overall theme of the room.
Include engaging toys that can double as room decor to add the finishing touches to the theme. A "Moon in My Room" toy projects the moon onto the wall and lets you play with different moon phases. Space ships and astronaut related toys are fun to play with and perfect to set up on a display shelf when not in use.
