How to Change the Look of a Split Foyer Into a Cape Cod

Cape Cod homes are colonial-style structures that are modeled after the early homes of New England. They often feature elements of nautical decor, weathered furniture and historic pieces. Decorating your split foyer in this design style will ease your guests from the front door into a serene and comfortable space. Cape Cod decor is light and airy and will make your guests feel welcome.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the split foyer. Give the spaces the same paint color to make them look like one space. Beige, cream, white or a pale blue are appropriate colors for a Cape Cod look.

    • 2

Install wainscoting. Wainscoting is a common element in Cape Cod decor and makes the room feel more intimate. Add crown molding around both areas of the split foyer to balance out the wainscoting.

    • 3

Replace your floors if you have carpet or tile. Hardwood floors are fitting for the Cape Cod look. Refinish your existing floors if you currently have hardwood. A slightly weathered flooring can also easily work within this style. Layer area rugs over the split foyer floors.

Replace your window treatments. Add light, sheer curtains or gingham fabric to any windows. Match the panels from one area of your foyer to the next to help blend the two spaces together.

Place small console tables in the split foyer. White furnishings or furnishings with a weathered look are appropriate for this design aesthetic. Add a small dresser and mirror to the split foyer area that is not located next to the door. Place a small table with a tableskirt and a chair with a seat cover in an open area to create a small seating and dining area. As an alternative, place a white armchair or rocking chair in the foyer.

Change out accessories. Remove modern-looking accessories and replace them with more rustic elements. Hang old rope on the wall. Hang antique frames. Seashells, nets and pictures of lighthouses match the Cape Cod style. A chipped and worn ceramic piece can be displayed on a weathered piece of furniture.
